Standing breaks are good for the body and brain. Standing and moving more may allow you to continue doing the things you enjoy. Use this free online toolkit for ideas on how to break up sitting time every day.
Whether you are an older adult, have a loved one in a retirement home, or work in one, we have resources to help you Stand When You Can!

IS THIS FOR ME?
THE BENEFITS OF STANDING WHEN YOU CAN
Many people have busy lives and believe there is no way they sit too much or are too “sedentary”. But many of the things we like and need to do involve sitting – watching TV, eating a meal and drinking coffee or tea, visiting with friends, or reading a good book. Research shows that even people who do exercise classes or go for walks still spend most of their time during the day sitting. It is something we all do! (If you aren’t sure, keep track for a week using our “Sitting Log”).
But we know that sitting less and moving more during the day can be beneficial for our health! As we get older it may be even more important to stand and move frequently through the day. It can help maintain our mobility and balance. Even if you can’t stand for long periods of time, or go for long walks, just breaking up your sitting time with frequent, short “standing breaks” can help your legs get stronger and make walking easier!
So, this program is for everyone— because we can all benefit from changing our habits to sit a little less and move a little more, every day!
